Ban on CFC Inhalers

The FDA in compliance with Montreal protocol has banned the use of life saving CFC propellant asthma inhalers in order to save the ozone layer from depletion even though it has been acknowledged earlier that these inhalers do not perceptibly harm the ozone layer.Tremendous efforts have been made to reduce the CFC emissions in U.S. to less than 1%. However to eliminate this tiny amount of CFC from the environment,millions of Asthama patients have recently been forced to use new HFA(Hydrofluroalkane) inhalers. Transition has not been seamless. the main reasons being since HFA is not avilable in its generic form,they are more expensive than CFC inhalers.Some people believe that CFC inhalers were more powerful than HFA inhalers.But many doctors disagree saying that HFA is as good ,if not better than its CFC cousin.HFA and CFC inhalers are same in shape and size. The main difference? They have slightly different smell and taste and HFA mist is little less forceful and warmer coming out of inhaler.

I wish if really a character like Mistress of spices existed on this earth.Based on Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni"sNovel, movie is directed by Paul Mayeda Berges and written by Bend it like Beckham fame Gurinder Chadda.Star cast is Aishwarya Rai ,Dylann Mcdermott,Anupam Kher, Padma Laxmi.Mistress of spices is dadzzling tale of misbegotten dreams and desires,hopes and expectations woven with storyteller magic. The movie is about choosing between a life of special divine powers and that of ordinary love and compassion. Rai plays Tilo who is an orphan girl and run a spice store called "spice Bazaar ' in U.S.She has been taught to understand the language of spices by her mentor(Zohra Sehgal) and uses her skill to solve the problem of her customers.But her powers to command spices can work as long as she follows certain rules laid down by her mentor.Alas tilo fell in love and hell break on her.
"I love being Mistress of Spices.The spices are my love.I know their origin,colors,smells ,their magic power."
As if spices are the family members of Tilo.They are her only loved ones.As if she is theQueen of Kingdom of spices and spices are ready at her command.

As if spices are one of the integral part of human character like every human as its own choice of color,perfume,hobbies likewise all of us have one special spice of our own.

The moment she start getting attracted towards a man ,spices starts giving her warning like a wellwisher to stay away from him or you will lose all your power.She was offended when spices gave her the message to sent him away in the form of asafoetida. Instead she offered him "Tulsi" so that he could remember her and come back.

Dead as a Dodo

More words have been written about Dodo than any other extinct bird. Yet the truth is that nothing is known about this strange creature. In the year 1598 A.D the Portuguese sailors landing on the shores of islands of Mauritius discovered a previously unknown species of bird,the Dodo. having been isolated from the rest of humanity due to its island location,Dodo greeted the sailors with child like innocence.The sailors mistook the gentle spirit of dodo and its lack of fear for the new predators as stupidity. They dubbed the word DODO(meaning something similar to simpleton in Portuguese language). Dodo was entirely fearless of humans and this in combination of its flightlessness made it easy pray for human. When humans first visited Mauritius they also brought with them the animals that had not existed on the island before including dogs,pigs, cats and rats. Many dodos were killed by human for their tough meat and those who survived human had to face animals. By the year 1681 the last Dodo has died.
Dodo was the close relative of modern day pigeons and doves. It stood about 3feet tall,weighing 20 kg.Dodo had a large hooked beak and a plum of white feathers adorned the rear of Dodo. Despite its large built Dodo has small weak feathers which could not lift it in the air. Thus it was easy prey to Portuguese invaders who subjected it to death when it approached them seeking friendship.Today few remains or relics of Dodo remain. A Dodo egg is in display at the East London museum in South Africa. The bird was featured as a character by Lewis Caroll In Alice in wonderland. With the popularity of book ,Dodo became well known and recognizable icon of extiction.

GM foods-Pros and cons

Genetically modified brinjals has got a great media attention in last few weeks. They may or may may not agree with your taste buds but they had created a big news splash. The environmental organisations and public interest groups have been actively protesting against the modified version of brinjal. What actually are the issues with the GM food. Let us take alook on the pros and cons of GM.
Pros
GM foods are cost effective as they are "engineered" to resist pest and prosper under non optimal conditions.
Are more productive and have a larger yield.
Inbuilt resistance against weeds ,pests and diseases so no need of spraying pesticides and weedicides.
Offer more nutritional value and better flavor.
Essential if we have to feed the mass world population.
Cons
Farmers cannot save the seeds for sowing next season since GM seeds are made sterile for the second use through Terminator technology.
Native, wild insects that are closed to the plant (BT corn) are also killed.
A very small number of large companies will control the seed supply of the world.(Monsanto,Calgene,Bayer crop science)
"Superbugs" (resistant to pesticides) are almost certain to develop.
Roundup ready soybeans have already led to the origin of Superweeds that are resistant to all weed killers.
Unseen risk for human health.

Genetically modified food also known as Genetically Engineered food are the latest contribution of Genetic Engineering.Genetically modified food are made by inserting the genes of other species in their DNA.This kind of genetic engineering is done in microorganisms(GEMS-Genetically Engineered Microorganisms) , plants and animals.There are a variety of reasons for developing genetically modified organisms. The Flavr Savr tomato, the first commercially grown GM Food was came into origin to prevent the decaying of tomatoes .A gene was inserted in the tomato which delayed the ripening of fruits and thus increased the shelf life of fruit.
Current and future GM foods include:
Food that deliver vaccine: banana that yield Hepatitis B vaccine.
More nutritious food:rice with more iron and vitamins.
Plants producing new plastics.
